When watching a live TV broadcast, you will sometimes notice that the presenters are wearing earpieces. Why is this?
TV presenters wear earpieces to receive updates, instructions, and other vital information from the production team during the broadcast. Earpieces allow this information to be delivered discreetly, without interrupting the broadcast itself.
So, by wearing earpieces, presenters can avoid production team members wandering in and out of shot, as well as other audio or visual interruptions that may hamper the production (people talking to the presenter from behind the camera, for example). They can then deliver a professional end product to the viewer.
Another reason TV presenters wear earpieces is that the technology allows them to react to unscripted or unexpected changes without hesitation. If, for example, a newsreader is reading the nightly news when an event of national significance occurs, they can be informed of this and respond seamlessly and accordingly. This is especially true in the case of developing news stories that require real-time coverage.
Earpieces offer TV presenters an opportunity to hear from the director quickly and discreetly. On a film set, footage that doesn’t achieve the desired result can always be (and frequently is) re-shot. Live TV broadcasts lack this opportunity, meaning that, if there are technical issues, or some other unforeseen problems (a presenter facing the wrong camera, for example), the director has a chance to correct this without interrupting the broadcast itself.
Moreover, producers (or other, relevant parties) can remind or inform presenters that it is time to transition to a new segment, pre-taped video package, or commercial break. Producers can also use earpieces to remind presenters to impart key pieces of information that may have been forgotten, or otherwise gone unmentioned during the broadcast.
Earpieces also offer privacy. Only the presenter can hear what is being said. If the audience at home were to hear the director or producer’s instructions, it would make the entire production seem hollow and unprofessional, and it is likely that viewers would turn the TV off or change the channel.
Many earpieces worn by TV presenters feature ANC (active noise cancellation) technology. This helps to minimise auditory intrusions such as background noise, staff chatter, and other distractions. This, in turn, helps to ensure clear, reliable communication between the presenter and their colleagues.
In summary, TV presenters wear earpieces for a variety of reasons, with the main ones being that earpieces offer them the ability to respond and react to events as they happen, and that they can maintain seamless communication with production staff such as directors and producers.
In the pressure-filled world of live TV, almost anything can happen. Earpieces allow a measure of control in an environment that can be more challenging and spontaneous than almost any other form of media.
